Role Description

As a Senior Superintendent, I work in conjunction with the Project Manager during pre-construction to advise on constructability and scheduling. During construction, I am responsible for all site activities, safety and project scheduling. This includes the day-to-day coordination, planning, scheduling and field administration of the specific construction project I am assigned to.  Also, I have a detailed understanding of all site activities, sub-trade coordination, construction techniques, supervision of field staff, project cost control, and an ability to liaise with design consultants and owners.

Project Value: $400 million construction + $275 million process work

The new 640,000 square feet facility is expected to be one of the most technologically advanced poultry-processing plants in the world, with leading-edge food safety, environmental, and animal welfare processes and technologies.

This is a historic investment in the Canadian poultry sector, providing significant stakeholder and economic benefits and ensuring that Canada has sufficient domestic processing capacity to meet forecasted poultry production and demand."

Construction at the London site is expected to begin in the spring of 2019, with start-up planned to commence in the second quarter of 2021. The new plant will initially support over 1,450 direct full and part-time jobs, with additional job growth as production volumes increase over time. Maple Leaf will work closely with local agencies to recruit and train people and provide skilled jobs in a safe and inclusive workplace. Construction is expected to generate approximately 300 jobs, with almost 85% of project expenditures supporting domestic construction and installation contractors. The facility is expected to create a further 1,400 indirect jobs in the supplies and services sector and generate an estimated $1.2 billion of annual economic activity once it is fully operational.


·Canada Royal Milk

Kingston, Ontario                                                                                                                 

Start and Completion Date: June 2017 – August 2019

Project Value: $200 million construction + $100 million process work

Project Description: The project consists of a complete facility to receive 300,000 metric tons of raw cow milk, 300,000 metric tons of skim milk, and 30,000 metric tons of goat milk per day and convert it into milk powders (infant formula grade). The project will consist of site development, utility infrastructure potentially a full wastewater treatment system, process and support areas building structures and supporting main utilities consisting of: Truck receiving and associated offices/lab/trucker’s area and CIP Office building, welfare facilities, and laboratory building, Wet processing areas, 2 dryers, Warehouse and packaging buildings, Utilidor (2 levels), Utility Block, Site paving, parking, truck scales, and two guardhouses.

The plant’s initial first floor footprint area is approximately 280,000 square feet.


·Sentinel Storage Facility

Start and Completion Date: May 2016 - June 2017 

Project Value: $13 million

Project Description: Sentinel Erin Mills Storage Facility. 125,000 sq. ft., four-story building.  The facility will be used for short-term and long-term storage rental space and includes a large range of sizes and types of highly secure, 24-hour monitored, storage rental units for its customers. 


·St. Jerome’s University Campus Renewal Project

Start and Completion Date: March 2015 - April 2016 

Project Value: $47.4 million

Project Description: The St. Jerome’s University Campus Renewal Project is executed using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model – this represents the first-ever higher education facility in Canada to be completed using an IPD model of delivery. The project included the construction of a new 360-bed student residence, a new Academic Centre, plus expansions and renovations to several areas of the campus.

Role Description: General Foreman

Role and Responsibility: I was responsible for analyzing and planning installation/construction of steel structures. I communicated the work progress, scheduled variance, and reported crew and safety issues to project manager.  I interacted with architects, owners, building inspectors, utility representatives, and subcontractors.

·Trenton CFB maintenance Hangar 6, 2013-2014

Construction for the $82.3-million Maintenance Hangar 6 started in December 2012. It is for maintenance of the CC-177 Globemaster III fleet as well as CC-150 Polaris aircraft.  It has a total floor area of 18,244 square meters and a height of 30.48 meters with two aircraft bays, administration offices and warehouse space. The new facility is primarily used for the first-line maintenance activities on the C-17 Globemaster fleet, as well as housing maintenance support for C-150 Polaris aircraft.  The first aircraft is expected to be wheeled in early 2016.

 

·Leslie Barns (Formerly Ashbridges Bay TTC Maintenance/Storage Facility, Toronto, ON ($345M)

Leslie Barns is a light rail vehicle storage and maintenance facility under construction for the Toronto Transit Commission in TorontoOntario, Canada to house and service its 204 Flexity Outlook light rail vehicles.  Six sites were considered and Toronto City Council made the final choice of surplus land at Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant, at the southeast corner of Leslie Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, on November 11, 2009. The site is 22 acres (0.089 km2) and construction was projected to cost $345 million in June 2009. The carhouse covers 17,510 square meters (4.33 acres). The first of the new streetcar vehicles entered service in 2013–2014. The facility includes a 250-meter brake test track.

 

·Trenton CFB maintenance Hangar 2, Trenton, ON ($80M)

Hangar 2, completed in July 2013, is being used primarily by the 436 Squadron to house and maintain its new and growing fleet of C-130J Hercules tactical transport aircraft. Under consideration for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) gold level certification, Hangar 2 has several state-of-the-art green features incorporated into its design, including:

-An electric charging station for employees with hybrid/electronic vehicles

-Changing rooms and shower facilities for those who have adopted greener transportation methods

-A 100 percent reduction in the use of municipally provided potable water for sewage conveyance has been achieved by rainwater harvesting

-More than 75% of the waste generated during construction was diverted from landfills and instead was reused or recycled

 

·Royal Victoria Hospital Barrie, ON ($235M)

Royal Victoria Hospital’s Phase 1 Expansion Project will nearly double the size of the existing hospital and includes the addition of the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. The Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre will introduce facilities for radiation treatment and other advanced-level cancer services not previously available in the region. In its first year of operation, the center is expected to log over 62,000 patient visits from Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka - patients who previously would have had to travel long distances to receive treatment. The Hospital expansion will add 101 new inpatient beds, two additional Patient Care Units with 64 beds for the future expansion; a dedicated coronary care unit, expanded Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency departments and two new operating rooms.

 

·The Rose Theatre, Brampton, ON ($52M)

The $52 million-dollar project has a prominent location in the heart of Brampton, across from City Hall. This 65,000 square foot facility has a tall, domed rotunda entrance, high arched windows, sandstone block exterior, limestone trim and copper-topped roofs. The facility features an 880-seat theatre, a 200-seat secondary hall and community space for meetings. The curved south façade is articulated by a series of soaring arched windows, punched in a sweeping red sandstone-clad wall. The Rose Theatre in Brampton won top marks in the city’s urban design awards program, garnering both an award of excellence and the people’s choice award.
